What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a healing art that has developed over several millennia in Asia. It originated in China, as part of Traditional Chinese Medicine together with Herbology, Tui Na (massage technique), Moxibustion (warming technique), Qi Gong exercises and cupping. Acupuncture spread across Asia to Japan, Korea and Vietnam where it further developed into individual schools and styles.

Acupuncture is based on the idea of a network of energy channels, called meridians, that cover the whole body.  These supply every square inch of tissue with necessary life force called Qi (pronounced ‘chee’). On these pathways, with their deeper connections to the vital organs, are portals to the flow of Qi. These are the acupuncture points and are stimulated with very fine, hair thin needles during acupuncture treatments.

Any imbalance in the flow or vitality of Qi within the body can result in a change to health and well being.

Acupuncture can restore balance, promote health and well being.

Acupuncture Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q. Is acupuncture suitable for children?

A. Yes. Specific treatments are available for children which may not involve needles. Please contact me to find out more.

Q. How long does it take to work?

A. In my experience a large proportion of clients say they see positive results after 3 to 5 sessions. However, this may vary depending on the severity and specifics of your condition.

Q. Do I have to restrict what I do after my acupuncture treatment?

A. No, you can exercise or go about your daily life as normal.

Q. Should I see my doctor before receiving acupuncture treatment?

A. This is not essential although I would recommend you let your doctor know you are receiving acupuncture treatment.

Q. Can I undertake acupuncture while receiving other forms of treatment such as physiotherapy?

A. Yes. Acupuncture can complement or enhance other therapies.

Acupuncture Consultation and Treatment

During your first consultation we will discuss your health history. You will be asked a wide range of questions that help in forming a holistic diagnosis.

As the details are uncovered, we will get closer to understanding the underlying cause for your complaint.

You will most likely receive an acupuncture treatment during your initial consultation. The treatment requires me to touch or press different areas of your body. This is important for diagnosis and locating treatment points.

A towel or blanket will be provided to cover you during the examination and treatment.

Does acupuncture hurt and is it safe?

I practice a Japanese form of acupuncture in which very fine needles are used.  The sensation can be likened to a light pinch. The needles remain inserted for 7 to 15 minutes and are then carefully removed. Only sterile, disposable needles are used for your treatment.

Many clients say they “feel better in themselves” after acupuncture. This is because acupuncture treats the whole being rather than a single symptom.

ACC funded Acupuncture

Will ACC help pay for acupuncture treatment ?

To qualify for ACC assistance towards your acupuncture treatment costs you must have an ACC claim for an accidental injury. Please be aware that an ACC claim can be submitted by a physiotherapist, chiropractor, osteopath or a doctor, but not at the present time by any New Zealand acupuncturist.

I am an ACC provider, a member of Acupuncture New Zealand and hold a New Zealand National Diploma of Acupuncture.

You don’t need to see your doctor first before getting acupuncture, but as with any health-related treatment, it is wise to keep your doctor and any other health care professionals informed. A separate referral from your doctor is welcomed but not essential.

About Me

“I have been involved in natural healing practices since 1989…   … I chose to focus on Japanese style acupuncture because of its gentle and effective approach.”

New Zealand – 2001 to date

Since moving to New Zealand from Los Angeles in 2001, I have worked in private practice in Christchurch and Motueka. I received the National Diploma of Acupuncture in 2003 and hold an active membership with Acupuncture NZ (acupuncture.org.nz). I am an ACC provider.

While in New Zealand, I have continued my studies with leading acupuncture specialists including Stephen Birch, Ted Pearson, Tracey Walker, Daniel Deng and Will McLean, Kiiko Matsumoto, Monika Kobylecka.

Germany and the USA – prior to 2001

I was born in Germany and have practiced Acupuncture since 1993. I started my training in Germany and was awarded the ‘holistic health practitioner’ license (Heilpraktiker) in 1989 in Munich. I then moved to the USA and continued my studies, receiving a Master in Traditional Oriental Medicine from the prestigious Emperor’s College in Santa Monica, California in 1993. I also gained my United States national and California state certification in the same year.

A three month study visit to Shanghai, China in 1992 took the mystery out of the practice of Oriental medicine and showed me specifically how Chinese medicine is integrated into daily life in a very natural way. During my years in private practice in Los Angeles, I continued to further my education and refine my skills. Several seminars taken by Miki Shima and Kiiko Matsumoto, introduced me to Japanese-style acupuncture. Building on this, I joined an in depth study group with Avi Magidoff, focusing on the acupuncture style of Kiiko Matsumoto.
